Sunday, February 27, 2000 Mp3’s:
Anubis
If you are at this site, you SHOULD know
what Napster is. If not, you suck
ass. Go to
www.napster.com
and
click on "What is Napster?" Well,
anyway, it’s a program that allows users to TRADE mp3's. They don't supply them, they don't make them from CD's, they
just have a server that everyone logs into and can search each other's computers
for different songs. Because a lot
of these songs are pirated copies, the Recording Industry Association of America
has sprung into action, to eliminate any illegal activity.
They have launched a massive law suit against Napster, for
"contributory copyright infringement."
Now, lets get it straight. This
has nothing to do with legality or anything else, its about money.
The RIAA is afraid people will download mp3's instead of buying CD's, and
they will lose money. Well, great.
Selling rights and royalties so companies can use songs in their TV
shows, advertisements, movies, etc makes most of label money.
Another amount of money comes from concerts and merchandise.
But for the last twenty years, no money has been made from recordings.
Now, the LABEL makes some money, sure, but the artist makes NOTHING.
Artists make money on tour or selling royalties.
Right now, artists only get about $0.25 a CD sold.
That's right, you pay 17 bucks, and they get a quarter.
Everything else goes to the label. But
now, with the invention of mp3's, there is no need for labels.
Artists could sell their music from their web page for three dollars per
album, and get 12 times the profit instantly.
That entire 3 dollars will go to the artist; the label does nothing.
Now that programs that let you record to computer audio can be bought for
around 400 dollars, label's are worthless shit.
I mean FUCK, all that recording shit on CD's and whatnot was only
invented to get the music out to the people.
What the fuck is the point when everyone can log on from Afghanistan and
buy the music instantly? Right now
you have to dig through Uncle Jimbo's Ass to find music from other countries,
with the internet, you just point click, click some more, drool…wait, that’s
with porn. You just click the
titles you want and download the music, and you have it.
And with Napster, you still have to dig through Uncle's ass to find
entire albums on one computer, so it doesn't matter. Everyone I know goes out and gets the CD anyway (of course,
half of them get it from slayer for 5 bucks, but that’s another piracy rant
altogether…), just cuz they want the lil graphics, and the lyric sheet, and
the nice jewel case with all the labels and everything, plus mp3 players cost
like 5 times as much as a Discman. Fuck
you MS word, so it’s a long sentence, deal with it! Fucking bill gates. Anyway,
sorry, I get mad at my computer sometimes.
I also like how when you like, move your mouse over it to see what the
fucking problem is, it says Long sentence (no suggestions).
I mean, there's gotta be the obvious suggestion: SHORTEN IT, ASSHOLE.
Anyway, back to Napster. In
short, the RIAA are now suing someone that helps their business by spreading the
word of new music faster, but still only gives the consumer a tiny lil taste,
they still have to go buy the CD. If
they start going after individuals, they are going to be suing some of their
best customers. |
